
MSc Health Sciences (Retinal Screening - Diabetes)
Over the last year we have been working closely with Warwick University to help set up a masters degree in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. It will be running for the first time this academic year. Details of the MSc can be seen below.
The course is aimed to develop the skills and knowledge required to achieve excellent care for people with diabetes.
It is suitable for qualified healthcare professionals who have been working in:
Diabetes for a minimum of two years or
Diabetic retinopathy screening for at least one year
Also, the City & Guilds qualification in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening must be completed where appropriate.
Once completed you will have gained:
- Understanding the Epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology and haemodynamics of diabetic retinopathy
- The knowledge of pattern recognition and referral criteria for diabetic retinopathy, with precise advanced ability to interpret and grade retinal photographs and slit lamp/ophthalmoscope results
- The skills in using imaging techniques that can be used for eye investigations, and abilities to judge associated risk assessments and evaluate images produced
- A qualification which is nationally recognised and will improve holders' chance of promotion in the workplace

How is the MSc taught?
It is offered part time and can be completed between 2-8 years. Each module is usually taught over five days (Mon-Fri) at WMS. There are two routes available for the MSc:

Other study options
For each module completed you will be awarded 20 Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme (CATS) points. If you do not want to commit to studying a full masters degree you may choose to complete a:
a postgraduate certificate in Retinal Screening – Diabetes (2 core modules and 1 option module)
Or
a postgraduate diploma in Retinal screening – Diabetes (3 core modules and 3 option modules)
